Step One - Narrowing and selecting a topic

Today's Goal:

Select a research paper topic and gather background information.

Step Two - Gathering sources

  • Use JSTOR (you should have our login info; if not, ask a friend or Ms. Lamp)
  • Create APA reference page as you go
  • Use the APA template to help you format.
  • If you need further assistance with your format, use the Perdue OWL site

Step Three - Writing a preliminary thesis

**yes, it's ok if your thesis changes as you go. Actually, it's a good thing if it does!

Step Four - Taking notes/annotating sources

  • Create note cards and/or highlight sources
  • Each note card should include:
    • source from which the fact was taken (last name of author will do)
    • one fact that supports your thesis
    • page number from your source
  • If you aren't a fan of note cards, you should highlight/annotate facts from your sources.

Step Five - Creating an outline with a mostly finalized thesis

Step Six - Writing a first draft, including title and reference pages

Step Seven - Revise your paper and submit a final draft

Research paper reflection (to be filled out after you read your comments on the first draft)
